A Real Wedding at Pioneer Village

1. How did you two meet or what was the proposal like?:
Although it is cliché to say that we married our best friends, we were “just friends” for more than a year before we even started dating. To quote Ron Swanson we believed that we were, “work proximity associates” however many of our co-workers would frequently assume we were dating. We spent time together outside of work getting to know each other, our hobbies, passions and family. Finally, David came to his senses and we shared true love’s first kiss. When we started dating, we had already decided that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. We called it instant family as Betsy’s 6 year old daughter made us not only boyfriend and girlfriend but co-parents.

On an early summer staycation in downtown Phoenix, David told Betsy to get ready for a fancy meal out. As she was getting ready, David filled the room with scavenger hunt clues that walked Betsy through the highlights of their relationship and courtship. The last card asked her to meet him out by the rooftop pool where he asked for her hand in marriage. She said yes!

2. Were you happy with the venue?:
We were thrilled with Pioneer Village! The venue gives a phenomenal feel of classic Arizona landscape. We were married in March in their quaint early 19th century chapel which was set with a background of spring wildflowers. The chapel created an intimate and romantic ceremony followed by our reception in the livery. The livery provides a great space for an outdoor reception with a fantastic dance floor and a space for all our vendors. We were able to bring our own alcohol which is a huge cost savings and the food, catered by Pioneer village was hot, fresh and delicious! In the months after our wedding many of friends and family commented that it was the most fun wedding they had ever attended!

3. Describe the theme or color scheme of your wedding, and what you chose for your table setting at the reception:
We decided to let our passion come out in our wedding tastes. We had a Capitan America and Wonder Woman themed wedding. We didn’t want to be over the top, so we kept the theme subtle but still elegant. The first question we are always asked is “did people wear costumes?” Definitely no costumes, just touches like the bridesmaid’s hair bows or the groomsman’s socks. We chose royal blue and red as our colors and had our theme represented throughout the livery. Our tables had white linens with a centerpiece using a vase decorated with comic book pages from some of our favorite super heroes. Our cake was three tiered with one side elegant and classic white, the other side was decorated to represent three of our favorite superheroes.

4. What piece of advice would you give other couples planning their big day?
The day is about you and you should make it what you want, don’t allow others to dictate to you. We had a blast planning and working out the details of our theme as it was so personal. That being said, weddings are the best when everyone is having fun so try and think about your guests and their experience and take whatever steps you can to make things easy or possibly less expensive for them. We viewed our wedding as the melding of our families and that is a reason for everyone to celebrate!
