Your wedding checklist already includes your dress, your venue, your photographer and probably about a million other details. But what about your videographer? It’s one element many couples decide to skip, but you might want to think twice before you do. “It’s the number one thing people regret cutting,” explains Taryn Bills who co-owns Serendipity Videography with her husband Jeff.
Taryn explained why it’s important to hire a videographer in addition to a photographer. “Photos are, of course, fabulous. But, among other things, what video gives you that you wouldn’t otherwise have is the sound of the day. Think about your father walking you down the aisle, the toasts, and the vows during the ceremony. Or when you have your first look as a couple and he says, ‘You look so beautiful. I can’t believe you’re going to be my wife.’” These are all moments that couples are going to cherish for years and years to come. If you don’t have video, all of those elements are lost.”
When recent bride Anna Lee and her husband Rex were planning their wedding, they didn’t even consider hiring a videographer at first. “We decided to add one halfway through our planning, and oh boy, it was the best decision we ever made,” Anna says. “There is a huge difference being able to hear and watch the day’s events versus just replaying the day through photography. My husband and I have watched it over and over again, and it really evokes different emotions and truly brings us back to the day. We also got to see different aspects of our wedding that we had missed on the day of due to the chaos!”
The Lees chose Serendipity to do their videography. “They go out of their way to make the best creations,” Anna explains. “For example, I talked about my proposal in my wedding day interview and Jeff actually asked me if I had the proposal on video. I sent it over to him, and he included our proposal video in our wedding film! The way they combined all of the music and captured the best moments of our wedding was so amazing!”
Serendipity’s wedding videos are very cinematic in style and tell the couple’s story, including how they met and fell in love. The company recently launched a “baby sister company” called Simply Cinema to accommodate brides who have a more modest video budget. “It’s is more of a music video,” Taryn explains. “It’s a shorter highlight film. Simply Cinema is powered by Serendipity, so you can still have quality videography at a reasonable price. And it won’t be filmed by some dude with a camera who shows up at your event wearing jeans.”
Taryn cautions brides not to be discouraged by someone else’s experience with a bad videographer. “That’s not the way it is. Don’t miss out on this opportunity because you think it’s a certain way. Give it a chance. At least, meet with a couple of videographers and see if it’s something you want to do.” She recommends booking your videographer at least 6-9 months out.
Taryn and her team love what they do. “We’re entrusted with documenting people’s love on one of the biggest days of their lives. That is an incredible honor.” Thanks to the magic of videography, those expressions of love can live on forever.
