How to Insure a Happy Honeymoon

Your honeymoon should be one of the happiest and most relaxing times of your life, so the last thing you want to think about is something like a tropical storm or illness interfering with your plans. But if you protect yourself with travel insurance, you won’t have to worry as much about any “unthinkables” that might arise.

Q. What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance offers you a layer of protection in three basic areas—medical emergencies, cancellation/interruption issues and baggage loss.

Q. How much does travel insurance cost?
The cost is determined by three basic factors — your age, the total cost of your trip package (including land, air and amenities) and how long you will be traveling. Your destination has no bearing on the cost.

Q. Does travel insurance cover bad weather?
Canceling your trip because of bad weather like rain is not covered. However, hurricanes and other misfortunes that cause flight cancellations or trip interruptions may be covered by the insurance policy.

Q. What if one of us gets sick or injured while out of the country?
Most health insurance policies here in the U.S. do not cover your medical needs abroad. A travel insurance policy can assist with medical care, evacuation if necessary, and 24/7 help via phone so you feel more comfortable dealing with the issue at hand.

Q. What if our flight is cancelled or we miss a connection?
If you miss a connection because of reasons specified in your policy (you can’t just wake up late!), your insurance provider will assist in finding you new flights to get you on your way as quickly as possible.

Q. What if our bags are lost during travel?
If your bags are “lost” for more than 12 hours, many policies will reimburse you for a trip to the gift shop, so you can get things like a new toothbrush and some clothes so you can get on with your plans. If your bags never return, the policy will allow you to make a claim for reimbursement of the items lost, including the luggage itself.

Q.  What is cancellation/interruption coverage?
This coverage will reimburse you for forfeited, nonrefundable, unused payments or deposits if you must cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered illness, injury, death of one of the travelers or an immediate family member or other covered reasons.

Simply put, travel insurance protects your investment in your honeymoon. Rates, policies and exclusions vary by carrier, so be sure to consult your policy or travel agent for specific details. Then, go have a happy honeymoon!
